1992 Mariners

All Star(s): OF – Ken Griffey Jr. (3), 3B – Edgar Martinez (1)

Season Roundup: Mariners finished 7th in the AL West with a 64-98 record in the season. Randy Johnson won his first of four consecutive strikeout titles and Jr. finished a triple short of the cycle in the 1992 All Star Game in San Diego where he earned MVP honors.

Summary: To start the season the jersey was essentially the same as before. Rawlings was the provider still to start the season, but the word mark was absent on the right sleeve. And at some point, Russell Athletic took over and Russell’s ‘R’ word mark can be seen.

Full Description: Rawlings initially provided the Home White Jersey’s and they were a Raglan style. However, when Russell Athletic took over, its not likely they used the raglan style but the “set in sleeve” design that was typical of their construction moving forward. The overall look and design did not change though. They continued to have the Royal Blue Piping. The Crest is in all capital “MARINERS” with 3 layer, 2 color Blue and Gold twill. The numbers in front are below the crest and to the left and back were single layer, solid Royal Blue in sans-serif Varsity Block. The name, in block lettering, and numbers on back were also single layer Royal Blue twill.

July 16, 1992

After an announcement of the team’s move to Tampa, an 11th hour deal was struck with a local group that kept the club in Seattle. When the deal was complete, The Mariners hosted “Opening Night II” and gave away commemorative buttons that read, “July 16, 1992: Safe at Home”.

What they wore: The celebration included the team wearing these special home “Seattle” uniforms that they wore for 1 game. They never wore these jerseys before this event, or since. These were made by Rawlings.
